The romance seemed doomed because they were both doomed already. With or without each other, the two didn’t appear to able to make it in this world.

They were already doomed, though it is uncertain if that was by virtue of who they were, or by virtue of what this world was. Regardless of the answer, one possibility does, however, remain:

That the faintest sliver of hope existed for them to make it when they joined as one. The odds seemed to stack against them, but, together, they went from “absolutely fucked” to “probably fucked, but hey — anything’s possible.”

Ultimately, any odds were better than no odds. And we all like underdogs, don’t we? So they decided to roll the dice, and see just how fucked “probably fucked” really was.
